Six artists ask us to consider how we mark the land, and how it marks us.
Working across highly tactile mediums, six artists move between the monumental and the delicate.
A testament to how raw materials—wood, bronze, ink, oil, pastel, and pigment—can be manipulated to express a sense of place, memory, and atmosphere in an individual and unique way.
Penelope Oates’ mark‑making, using a soldering iron and brush on wood, becomes a way of tracing emotion whilst echoing mist, bark, scrub, rock and weathered earth.
Noni Ruker’s works are a fusion of recognizable landscapes with bold brushstrokes and abstract colour work. By blending traditional oil painting techniques with impressionism and expressionism, Noni creates a visual journey with light, shade, colour, and form.
Shelley McLean primarily focuses on the Australian landscape. With this collection, her choice of medium is pastel on paper, which creates a light, velvety touch to the movement of the shifting rhythms of her landscape interpretations.
Natasha Junmanee’s still life oil paintings, inspired by classical compositions, invite Australian birds into the domestic interior — away from the usual natural landscape and into a shared, intimate space.
Sharon Moroney’s delicate bird paintings explore human complexities. They are not mere representations, but vessels for an internal landscape. Pastel is integral to this expression with Its luminosity, softness and tactile immediacy.
Michael Vaynman creates bronze figurative and abstract sculpture, that explores the notion of beauty and the synthesis of geometries with organic forms such as the human figure.

“My work explores the changing atmospheres and moods of the Australian landscape, capturing the fleeting qualities of a moment and the character of each place. The richness and velvety feel of soft pastel enables me to create varied textures, from the softness of clouds to the finer textures of the landscape. I am also interested in expressing the feelings that a landscape can evoke.

Birds have occupied a quiet but persistent place within my visual language for as long as I can remember. My attraction to them was instinctive, preceding any conscious understanding of their symbolic significance. As a child, one of my earliest collections of my drawings was a book of birds. Even then, I sensed in them a freedom beyond the confines of the physical world.
Across religious traditions and cultural history, birds have come to embody the soul, transcendence, transformation and the passage between the earthly and the divine. It is this liminal quality – their ability to remain grounded while possessing the possibility of flight – that continues to resonate with me.
Through birds, I explore human complexities – longing, freedom, vulnerability and transcendence, allowing emotions that are difficult to articulate in words to emerge through image and colour. The process is both intuitive and cathartic.
Pastel is integral to this expression. Its luminosity, softness and tactile immediacy allow me to build layers of colour and atmosphere while retaining the presence of the hand. The delicate yet intensely expressive nature of the medium reflects my experience of the bird itself.
My birds are therefore not simply representations of nature, but vessels for an internal landscape – a continuing exploration of the human desire to transcend limitation and experience, even momentarily, the freedom of flight.

“Across these paintings and drawings, the terrain is not simply observed; it is inhabited. Mist drifts through gullies, light folds across ridgelines and the landscape becomes the springboard into memories and dreams.
Mark‑making becomes a way of tracing emotion whilst echoing bark, scrub, rock and weathered earth. With the passing of my mother this year I have contemplated the possibility that she is somehow still present — not as a figure, but as a subtle movement of mist in the air or a soft shift in the vapour rising from the ground. I am inviting the viewer into landscapes where memory moves with the weather, where the mist shifts and reveals, and where the presence of those we’ve lost can still be sensed in the quiet breathing of our surrounds.”
