Marking Time
Six artists ask us to consider how we mark the land, and how it marks us.
Working across highly tactile mediums, six artists move between the monumental and the delicate.
A testament to how raw materials—wood, bronze, ink, oil, pastel, and pigment—can be manipulated to express a sense of place, memory, and atmosphere in an individual and unique way.
Noni Ruker’s impressionistic oil paintings on canvas, capture the immediate, dancing quality of the Australian light.
Penny Oates’s delicate paintings are achieved by using a soldering iron to draw and ink and acrylic, to scorch atmospheric vistas permanently into wood.
The light, velvety touch of Shelley McLean’s pastel medium adds a fragile layer of movement to the shifting rhythms of her landscape interpretations
Inspired by classical compositions, Natasha Junmanee anchors the space with her rich, colourful, intimate still life paintings, celebrating the ordinary by being extraordinary.
Sharon Moroney’s delicate pastel paintings of Australian native birds offer a beautiful contrast and inspire us to remember and truly notice the wild life that moves through our daily lives.
The physical structures in the exhibition, challenge how we perceive weight and space. Paul Kay’s abstract wooden wall sculptures, which play with shadow and relief, and Michael Vayman’s bronze sculptures, which freeze fluid movement with timeless, heavy metal.

Through birds, I explore human complexities – longing, freedom, vulnerability and transcendence.
Pastel is integral to this expression. Its luminosity, softness and tactile immediacy allow me to build layers of colour and atmosphere, while retaining the presence of the hand.
