My long association with and love of the printing process started when I was a very green 15 year old working in the art department of the local and well respected newspaper The Examiner in Launceston, Tasmania. Thrown in at the deep end, I was exposed to the production of images by hot-type metal printing for the newspaper. Everything was on a short deadline for the next day’s paper. What I had drawn up, photographed or graphically art directed one day was being seen by thousands of people the next day. It was thrilling and satisfying work. Much later when I devoted myself to full time art, I learned the craft of etching, woodblock printing and monoprinting, often making images of the ocean and the beach where I surf and live. Initially I worked with master printers but after acquiring my own small printing press I can now pull my own prints. I still love the process – taking a drawing from a sketchbook as inspiration, etching the image onto a zinc plate, the inking up, the wetting of the archival paper, and the surprise of the final image. Printing, where technique and creativity come together.
