Isabelle Devos

Seemingly ordinary landscapes, the roads, buildings and fields I have come to know well are the subject matter of much of my work. These are the places that ground me to where I live; places I find myself in regularly, where long walks are taken and imagined stories are shaped. My paintings depict these familiar landscapes without humans or much evidence of them, yet full of potential and imagined events in which people have made their mark upon that landscape. I like to simplify what I see in the landscape to its essence of form, light and colour. The tone and composition are chosen to enhance a particular mood, exposing just some of the hidden story that lies beneath the smooth and organised surface. The landscapes, townscapes and their inhabitants are a wonderful source of imagination for me, a film set or stage where a quiet drama is on the verge of being played out. -Isabelle Devos, 2021
