Shelley McLean
Shelley is an Australian artist based in the foothills of the Southern Highlands, NSW. A lifelong engagement with art and creativity underpins her practice, guiding her exploration of the Australian landscape and its shifting moods. With a deep appreciation for the country's natural beauty, her contemporary work is shaped by personal experience and careful observation.
Having lived in various parts of country New South Wales, as well as the Sydney and Canberra regions, her work reflects a strong sense of place and a lasting connection to a range of natural landscapes.
Shelley works from her bushland studio, where the surrounding native landscape is a constant source of inspiration. She loves being immersed in nature and is captivated by the vastness of plains and mountain ranges, moody skies, and reflective waterscapes in their many forms. She is drawn to interesting architecture, especially aged and weathered buildings and structures shaped by time and use, exploring how they interact with the land to reveal layers of history, character and a quiet narrative.
While primarily focused on landscapes, Shelley’s awareness of the more intricate details of life and nature inspires her to explore wildlife and still life, with each subject offering its own story and emotional depth. Through a sensitive use of light, pattern, colour, and form, she seeks to express mood and meaning within each work, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and connect with the beauty and depth of the moment captured. Shelley works with various mediums and has a particular fondness for soft pastels, valuing their texture and expressive versatility.

“I work with a range of mediums including soft pastels, acrylics and oils. Pastels remain my favourite medium as they allow me to create varying textures depending on the subject and the mood or effect I am trying to achieve. This is further influenced by the choice of surface — from textured fine-grit papers, to smoother varieties —each enabling the gradual build up of multiple layers, or subtle marks that allow the underlying surface to show through.”
