Paul Kay

Paul Kay has worked with wood as an Engineering Patternmaker since 1971. Working with designers, artists, manufacturers and technicians Paul has produced every conceivable shape for domestic and international manufacture. During the early 1990’s Paul attended Friday night drawing classes at Julian Ashton Art Classes, Sydney. This inspired an artistic career in wall and table sculpture using single pieces of timber as his medium.

All the sculptures in this body of work are my response in observing humanity and our environment. These elements are forever influencing our thoughts, our reactions and discussions, our lifestyle and trends, social media, the sciences, our education and our health. Wood, the age-old naturally occurring material has enabled me to convey my thoughts and ideas as a medium for visual art. Each of these sculptures are from a single piece of timber. The colours used in my sculptures are a conscious part of this influence and through my personal studies I am inspired by many artists from early to mid 20th century modernism. In these three-dimensional relief sculptures, shadow becomes an integral part of the interplay between the conscious and sub conscious interpretation of the viewer.
