Jane du Rand

South African borne, Ipswich based Jane du Rand, uses her art practice to document and better understand the world around her, building three-dimensional landscapes that feature the native flora and fauna she encounters while bushwalking. Making notes of everything she sees while hiking, Jane recreates these scenes using a combination of ceramic and mosaic techniques. Presented under glass cloches, they are reminiscent of the dioramas found in natural history museums – a contemporary sculptural version of the early natural history illustrations and specimen displays that existed in the Victorian era.

An alumna of the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban, South Africa, Jane originally trained as an architect. She is internationally recognized for her large-scale ceramic mosaic murals commissioned for public buildings and private homes in Europe, the UK, the USA, South Africa and Australia.

Her intricate designs are incorporated into the architecture of these civic and private buildings around the world. Made by hand in her Brisbane studio, these commissions allow du Rand to fully reflect the environment in which they are to be situated – each mural densely populated with iconography unique to the area.

Jane du Rand was a finalist in the 2023 Siliceous award for ceramic excellence and was one of 6 artists showcased in the 2023 Museum of Brisbane exhibition, Clay: Collected Ceramics, with her piece Brisbane Bush Turkey. Acquired by the museum. She was a finalist in the 2020 and 2022 Queensland Regional Art Awards. ‘Living in Ipswich’ a solo exhibition was presented at Ipswich Art Gallery in 2020 and Green Red and Black in 2023, In 2023, Jane completed a large public art installation on the wall of the new Ipswich Mental Health Unit at Ipswich Hospital, titled ‘All the Birds Singing’.
