Alan Rose
Originally trained as an engineer, Alan graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from NAS in 2009.
His practice has always involved precise three-dimensional geometric repetitions, employingblocks, tiles, grids or lenticular structures.
This art picks up the threads of the conceptual art, op-art and kinetic art of the 60s, which was less about the immediate expressionism of the artist and more about the mental state of the viewer. In a sense it links with Sol le Witt’s conceptualism, where the “ planning and decision-making are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair”. The intuitive, creative process is moved one step backwards, but never dispensed with.
The works are intended to sit on the boundary between order and chaos. The viewer is encouraged to see repeating patterns where there is only disorder, or to see disorder where on closer examination patterns exist. It is in this moment of contemplation that the artwork becomes successful.
