Unlike the other works in this\nexhibition, which explore tension, vulnerability, concealment, or struggle,\nthis bird embodies joy, presence, and celebration.\n\nI sought the emotion of delight-the unrestrained vitality of life expressed in\ncolour, movement and light. The lorikeet becomes the capstone to the\nseries, a visual exhalation after the weight of the other themes. Its\nbrilliance reminds us that even amid complexity, uncertainty, and\nchallenge, there is room for exuberance, play and affirmation.\n\nThrough this painting, I hope to leave the viewer with a sense of emotional\nrelease, a moment to pause and be fully present, witnessing the sheer joy\nof living as reflected in FEATHER","slug":"sharon-moroney-light-as-a-feather","pageText":"TO BE OPENED BY MICHELLE HISCOCK ON SATURDAY 28 FEBRUARY, 5 - 7PM\n\nLight as a Feather brings together a series of soft pastel works that portray birds with faithful detail while placing them in compositions that feel quietly unexpected. Each piece draws the viewer into a close, almost private encounter—an angle just slightly off the conventional portrait, a framing that highlights a gesture, a tilt of the head, or the shimmering pattern of plumage often missed in passing.\n\nRather than abstracting their forms, the artist uses composition to gently reimagine how birds might be seen. Backgrounds fall away, space becomes simplified, and the viewer is invited into a vantage point that feels both intimate and contemplative. These shifts create a sense of quiet strangeness— not enough to unmoor the image, but enough to make the familiar appear newly alive.\n\nSoft pastel is central to this transformation. The medium’s velvety surface and mutable edges allow the artist to layer colour with a delicacy that mirrors the structure of feathers themselves. Light seems to rest on the drawings, not simply illuminate them, enhancing the birds’ fragility while revealing their inner strength and quiet determination.\n\nThe works carry the echo of the artist’s childhood connection to birds — creatures that once represented freedom, escape, and the promise of worlds beyond reach. In Light as a Feather, that early sense of wonder is renewed through attention to detail and dynamic composition. Each bird becomes both itself and something more: a moment of stillness, a breath of lightness, an invitation to pause. Together, these images create an exhibition that celebrates the bird as both subject and symbol— recognisable, grounded, yet seen anew through the gentle, purposeful shift of perspective.","date":"2026-02-25T00:00:00+00:00","catalogue":[{"id":"23187","filename":"Catalogue_SharonMORONEY_25Feb2026_FrancesKeevil_web2.pdf","url":"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/catalogue/Catalogue_SharonMORONEY_25Feb2026_FrancesKeevil_web2.pdf"}],"endDate":"2026-03-08T06:00:00+00:00","images":[{"id":"23136","url":"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/SharonMORONEY_Refraction.jpg","filename":"SharonMORONEY_Refraction.jpg","slug":null,"img":"<img src=\"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/SharonMORONEY_Refraction.jpg\" width=\"2200\" height=\"1492\" alt=\"Sharon MORONEY Refraction\">"},{"id":"22245","url":"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/Light-as-Feather_2025-12-08-101010_hkfn.jpg","filename":"Light-as-Feather_2025-12-08-101010_hkfn.jpg","slug":null,"img":"<img src=\"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/Light-as-Feather_2025-12-08-101010_hkfn.jpg\" width=\"2953\" height=\"2169\" alt=\"Light as Feather\">"}],"artist":[{"id":"22113","slug":"sharon-moroney","title":"Sharon Moroney","images":[{"id":"23136","url":"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/SharonMORONEY_Refraction.jpg","filename":"SharonMORONEY_Refraction.jpg","slug":null,"img":"<img src=\"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/SharonMORONEY_Refraction.jpg\" width=\"2200\" height=\"1492\" alt=\"Sharon MORONEY Refraction\">"},{"id":"22245","url":"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/Light-as-Feather_2025-12-08-101010_hkfn.jpg","filename":"Light-as-Feather_2025-12-08-101010_hkfn.jpg","slug":null,"img":"<img src=\"https://franceskeevil.frb.io/artworks/Light-as-Feather_2025-12-08-101010_hkfn.jpg\" width=\"2953\" height=\"2169\" alt=\"Light as Feather\">"}]}],"artworks":[{"id":"22358","slug":"eye-of-the-beholder-2","title":"Eye of the Beholder","sold":["sold"],"pageText":"Eye of the Beholder\nHere I have painted a Sydney white ibis—a bird so often dismissed as\ngrubby, intrusive, even undesirable. Commonly labelled a pest, it is rarely\nafforded the same admiration as more celebrated species.\n\nIn this work, I have painted it with care and reverence. It preens, absorbed\nin its own ritual of maintenance, its feathers catching light with an\nunexpected elegance. Removed from its usual urban context, it becomes\nalmost regal-dignified, self-contained, assured.\n\nThe painting questions how perception shapes value. What we overlook,\nwhat we reject, what we decide is unworthy of beauty. The ibis becomes a\nmetaphor for those aspects of ourselves—or others—that are judged too\nquickly. Traits that appear awkward, inconvenient, or unrefined may, under\ncloser attention reveal complexity and quiet splendour. Beauty, after all, is\nrarely fixed.
